May 14th. 1902.
I have the honour to report that, according to
information this day furnished to me by Mr. Seaton,
British Vice-Consul at Macao, the French Authorities
have made arrangements for the acquisition of a large
area of land within Chinese Territory in the Heung
Shan District near Macao at a cost of $140,000, which
they intend to use as a sanatorium in connection with
their Tonkin and Naval and Military Forces in the East.
The purchase of the land in question has been
made from the Chinese owners by French Missionaries in
whose name the land will continue to be held.
Mr. Seaton further reports that the recent at-
tempt by the French Consul to acquire, on behalf of
the Tonkin Government, the property of one of the
Portuguese
